Oobleck has to be one of the oddest outgrowths of literature I’ve ever seen, but the green slime looks like a blast to make in the kitchen.

The Instructables website says Oobleck is “a non-newtonian fluid. That is, it acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a solid when a force is acting on it. You can grab it and then it will ooze out of your hands. Make enough Oobleck and you can even walk on it!” (Or run, as in this YouTube video.)

Oobleck is named for the goo featured in Dr. Seuss’ book, “Bartholomew and the Oobleck” (1949). It’s a sequel of sorts to “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins,” (1938) and features King Derwin of Didd and his young subject.

With “Thinking, Fast and Slow,” Nobel laureate Daniel Kahneman serves up a big slice of sober pie.

“Most of us view the world as more benign than it really is, our own attributes more favorable than they truly are, and the goals we adopt as more achievable than they are likely to be,” he writes in this fascinating and flat-out disconcerting book.

Sure, our shared foibles can be amusing, as in the finding that “90 percent of drivers believe they are better than average.” But that widespread inflated sense of ourselves also contributes “to why people litigate, why they start wars, and why they open small businesses,” 65 percent of which will fail in the first five years, Kahneman observes.

In 2009 author Kathryn Stockett went public with her first novel, The Help, which relates the stories of black female domestics who worked for white families in Jackson, Mississippi in the early days of the Civil Rights Movement. The New York Times predicted it would be a button-pushing, soon to be wildly popular novel and they were right.

The book has sold five million copies and has spent more than 100 weeks on the The New York Times Best Seller list and was made into a very successful and critically acclaimed comedy/drama film within two years. It also drew the criticism from Ida E.

When you think of the Marines you think of some tough mudders. I am talking about the able to melt steel with a single look, chew and spit out nails, and able to take the fumes from a Dutch oven kind of tough. Lip-synching Britney Spears is not at the top of the list of what is considered to be tough. But that is exactly what the Marines of unit 226 Rein, stationed in Afghanistan, have done and they dare you to say anything about it.

These light hearted Maries are apparently big Britney Spears fans. They wanted to show how much they loved Britney and her music by lip-synching “Hold It Against Me” during some of their down time. The

What’s better than Denver musician Nathaniel Rateliff’s voice? Denver musician a. Tom Collins’ voice.

Oh no!

Fine, it’s a draw.

I fell infatuation with Rateliff when I saw his former band, The Wheel, open for Denver greats Slim Cessna’s Auto Club years ago at Bender’s in Denver. Then I heard “Slow” on The Wheel’s 2007 Desire and Dissolving Men. Jesus, Jerry and Joseph. Jubilation!

Then a. Tom Collins came along with the EP “OH NO!” Damn jerks. I can hardly listen to anything but these days.

Aaron Tom Collins, former singer of Machine Gun Blues, fronts the band on keys and vocals and is joined by wild gangster horns and gang-banging vocals.
