Native strawberries will soon be gone, but don’t go into mourning – there are plenty of great things to come during the summer growing season. Right now, zucchini flowers are grabbing the spotlight at Alforno Trattoria in Old Saybrook.

The flowers, grown organically on a Deep River farm, will be on the specials menu for the duration of their season. They’re prepared two ways as appetizers ($11): tempura-fried or sauteed and stuffed with ricotta, goat cheese and Parmigiano Reggiano. An entree special ($24) has four cheese-stuffed flowers atop a seasonal risotto, served with balsamic demiglace and grilled asparagus.

Alforno is at 1654 Boston Post Road (Benny’s Plaza) in Old Saybrook. 860-399-4166, alforno.net.
